Educating for Peace, Social Justice, and Human Rights (EDGI 550) will be open for registration for the 2023 Summer Quarter. This course is open to all Drexel graduate students. EDGI 550 is an interdisciplinary course that provides an overview of peace and human rights education including history, theories, and pedagogy. This course will highlight current events such as the ongoing protests in Iran and anti-trans legislation in the United States, and how to tie these important political topics into the classroom. Students will explore education for social change by exploring case studies, research, and lesson plans within formal institutions, non-formal community-based organizations, and non-governmental organizations. The course will also focus on addressing issues of violence, conflict, and security while promoting social justice, human rights, and peace in the classroom and the wider community. Last year, EDGI 550 received rave reviews and was a must-take course for Graduate students interested in education!

Educating for Peace, Social Justice, and Human Rights will be taught by Kathlyn Elliott who is a Drexel graduate and Fulbright grantee. Kathlyn researches the roles education and schooling play in the prevention of violent extremism. Her research interests also include global citizenship education, teacher advocacy and activism, and education in emergencies. Kathlyn is a postdoctoral fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital.

To register, go to your DrexelOne portal, select Summer Term 2023 for course registration, and search EDGI 550. The course will appear as Ed: Global and International Ed.
